Maryland

Maryland, though not a large state geographically, has a thriving wine industry. The state has a varied topography and surprisingly diverse climate, from the Atlantic shoreline to the east and the hilly terrain in the western edge of the state.

As a result of decades of grape growing experimentation, there are now over 40 wineries that dot the state. There are also six Maryland wine trails, which are highly organized with many special events.

Several neighboring states also have thriving wine cultures, like Pennsylvania and New Jersey. This area is ideal for wine travelers, either for a weekend or an extended journey.

Just about every type of red and white grape is grown in Maryland, resulting in a diverse palate of over 300 wines.
